Canalside, and Gracemount Day Centres, Join Forces to Enhance Support in South Edinburgh for Older People
Two much-loved local services for older people have come together in an exciting new chapter for Edinburgh’s Community Care. Canalside Day Centre Libertus and Gracemount Day Centre Libertus merged, with all activities and services having moved to the Gracemount site.
The merger aims to bring the best of both centres under one roof, ensuring that older people continue to receive high-quality support, while benefiting from enhanced facilities and a wider range of activities including online LiberActive activities.
By working together from Gracemount Day Centre, the combined team will be able to offer more social opportunities, larger group activities, and greater flexibility in how care and support are provided. The spacious Gracemount site is already fully equipped with bright, accessible activity spaces, a memorial garden, and modern amenities that can better accommodate everyone’s needs from the SE and SW of Edinburgh.
Staff from both centres will continue to work together, bringing their years of experience, strong community relationships, and specialist skills. The familiar faces helped ensure that everyone felt welcomed and supported during the transition.
A spokesperson for Libertus said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our services. By coming together at Gracemount, we can offer even more activities, more togetherness, and more support — all in one place. We’re excited to create a lively, inclusive environment where people can continue to thrive.”

For members, the merger has meant access to a wider range of daily activities, from gentle exercise classes and arts and crafts to gardening, reminiscence sessions, and social events. The larger group setting is expected to continue to reduce loneliness and promote stronger social connections among all members.
Families and carers will also benefit from the enhanced service, knowing their loved ones are spending time in a welcoming, well-supported community, with carers groups still on offer.
Transport arrangements were carefully planned to ensure a smooth transition for all members.
This marks the beginning of a new, more vibrant era for our members.
