We provide two registered Day Care services to local older people alongside a plethora of recreational, educational, cultural and social activities. Libertus Services is dedicated to empowering its’ Members to make informed choices and to engage with activities which offer a selection of physical activity, reminiscence, games and art as therapy.
Following our most recent Care Inspectorate visit we were awarded Grade 6 “Excellent” for Quality of Care and Support.
“Coming here gives me something to look forward to. I enjoy the activities and the company, and it’s nice getting out and seeing familiar faces. I’ve made a few good friends, and the staff are always kind and easy to talk to. I feel comfortable here and really enjoy my time.”

Carers Groups
In 2022-2023, we got grant funding to run new Carers groups for both our services.
We use this funding to provide carers groups to help the wider Libertus family, with all member carers having access to it.
We also accept carers from other organisations and ones referred from the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. It enables us to create meaningful and
structured mental health support for those we have identified in the SE and SW of Edinburgh.
We ensure we have skilled staff that are able to receive in-house training, sharing knowledge and working with other organisations we are able to provide a continuous progression of learning and development. The
carers groups will be in linked in with both the people who attend the
services, our partners in the mental health reference group and any other
organisations who can provide them support like VOCAL. We engage with
them to see how we can offer support and progression.
All participation in any activities is free of charge. We achieve this by providing the location for the meeting within our buildings, and Libertus is committed to ensuring we achieve the purchase of any resources needed within them. All activities are available to all carers, both internally and externally through a robust referral process. Everyone is contacted in advance of every meeting. Alternative ways to communication are offered if they cannot attend in person via use of technology. Alterative support is offered if someone cannot attend the meeting at all via zoom.
This impacts on all the carers and everyone in their lives with the members at the centre of this. It is a multi-layered approach. By using a person-centered approach, we are already able to deliver our services in
partnership with our members, participants, volunteers and staff. We follow the same tried and tested processes within the carers groups.

We are delighted to share further details about Self-Directed Support (SDS) provided through The City of Edinburgh Council which is available at both our Canalside and Gracemount locations.
So, what is SDS?
Self-directed support is a flexible approach to social care services that offers you greater choice and control over how your care and support needs are met. It allows you to decide on the kind of support you want and when you want to use it.
There are four main ways to arrange and manage your support under this system:
- Option 1 – the Partnership provides you with a direct payment which you use to buy support yourself. Examples of this could be accessing a service directly, such as a Libertus’ day services or Positive Futures activity groups. This means you are managing the money yourself.
- Option 2 – you choose the support you want and ask the Partnership or another party to organise your support on your behalf. This means you do not need to manage the money yourself.
- Option 3 – you ask the Partnership to choose and organise the support you need.
- Option 4 – you choose a combination of options 1, 2 or 3.
Self-directed support ensures your care is shaped around your individual circumstances, giving you the freedom to make choices that work best for you.
Service Details
Self-Directed Support is facilitated by The City of Edinburgh Council. How an individual chooses to use SDS in practice will look different for everyone. We’re aware that there is a lot of information available and that this can be difficult to digest. If you are interested in how SDS could work for yourself, or a loved one, please do not hesitate to reach out – we would love to hear from you!

The Herbert Protocol is a form that family members or carers complete for a person living with dementia or someone who may be at risk of going missing. Download a Herbert Protocol form from Police Scotland website.
